From Passo Duràn (provincial road 347) to Rifugio A. Sonino al Coldai via Rifugio Carestiato, Vazzolèr and, optionally, Rifugio Tissi
This variant broadens your perspective on the entire Moiazza–Civetta chain, extending on the Agordo side and touching three historic alpine refuges. Despite more elevation change and distance than the basic route, it avoids the most exposed equipped stretches, still offering extremely striking high-altitude environments.
From Passo Duràn (1,605 m), on the west side of the road, take CAI trail 549; it climbs the meadows and borders the Pass as far as a dirt road. This road, keeping a distance from the rocky walls, reaches Col dei Pass and Rifugio Bruto Carestiato (1,834 m, 1 hour), a privileged balcony over the Moiazza.
From the alpine refuge, continue northwest along trail 554, which runs through the southwestern slope of the Moiazza, alternating short ups and downs amid high-altitude pastures, detritus areas with dwarf pines, and stretches of woodland. Past Forcella del Camp (1,933 m, 2 hours and 30 min), the path begins a long descent at the base of the west side of Cima delle Nevère, with some passages under rock, until it joins cart track 555 at an intersection with a hairpin bend (1,435m, 4 hours and 30 min) at the foot of monumental Torre Trieste. Track 555 climbs from Listolade and Capanna Trieste; here, you continue north along the base of Val dei Cantoni to reach Rifugio Mario Vazzoler (1,714m, about 5 hours).
From Rifugio Vazzoler, continue along mule track 560 towards Torre Venezia, sloping regularly up to Case Favretti (1,827m). As you leave the woods behind, the trail heads to Sella di Pelsa (1,954 m, 6 hours), where the landscape finally opens up onto the ramparts of Civetta. Continue along the same track, now on open terrain beyond the edge of the forest, ignoring the detour for trail 567 and crossing Val Civetta amongst small grassy benches, scree slopes, and large boulders, with some ups and downs to the first junction with trail 563 for Rifugio Attilio Tissi (2,250 m, about 40 minutes uphill from here). Those who wish to include Rifugio Tissi in their journey can follow path 563, make the round trip to the panoramic viewpoint refuge; then return onto path 560 or continue along path 560 to Forcella di Col Rean (2,10 m, 7 hours), where a second junction with trail 563 allows you to climb to the Tissi refuge in about 25 minutes.
The Val Civetta traverse goes on between marked ascents and descents up to Lake Coldai (2,143 m); a final short climb leads to Forcella Coldai (2,191 m, about 8 hours and 45 min); here, climbing down on a stony slope, you reach Rifugio Adolfo Sonino al Coldai (2,132 m, 9 hours) in a few minutes.
