From Le Bócole (Forno di Zoldo) to Rifugio G. Angelini - Sora’l Sass
The Zoldo Circuit starts just outside Forno di Zoldo, while the Maè stream accompanies your first steps.
At Le Bócole (805 m), past the San Giovanni bridge and the small gravel pit next to a hydroelectric plant, take trail 531, which soon climbs into the woods and rapidly gains altitude towards a brook, the Ru de Doa. After an initial steeper section, from the junction with the path coming from Barón (see variant) at about 950 m, the clearly visible path becomes increasingly regular and leads to the Casèra di Col Marsàng clearing (1,290 m, about 1 hour and 30 min); take a deep breath, then relax and enjoy the view that opens onto the surrounding slopes.
Continue along trail 531 to a junction; here leave the main track to follow trail 532 on the right, which climbs the south-eastern sides of Col Pelós. After passing a deep valley, Val de Lugàn, your climb softens to reach the summit ridge; continue west to a saddle, Forcella Col Pelós (about 4 hours from the start), separating Col Pelós from the Spiz di Mezzodì. If you turn north, you are still on 532, which runs along the Spiz Group in the east and leads to the extreme overhang of the Belvedere, where a fork suggests choosing between a normal variant and one for experienced hikers. If you follow the right branch (trail 532), you descend among dwarf pines (Pinus mugo), bypassing the Belvedere’s northern foot. The path then bends westwards and goes into the woods where the terrain becomes gentler; rejoin the route coming from the upper variant and, on an easy track, reach the Sora’l Sass clearing and Rifugio Angelini ‑ Sora ’l Sass de Mezodì (1,588 m, approx. 5 hours and 45 min).
In a few minutes, entering the woods behind the alpine refuge, you reach the Belvedere Basso, an outstanding panoramic view of the Zoldo Valley.
Variant across scree, Giarón dantre i Spiz (experienced hikers)
Those seeking challenging terrain can follow the left pathway of trail 532, which climbs to Forcella del Belvedere. From here, descend the west side along a rocky gully equipped with wire ropes (Watch out!); then, cross a strip lined with dwarf pines up to the foot of the Giarón dantre i Spiz. Trail 532 then descends again, returns into the forest, and leads to the clearing of Sora’l Sass and Rifugio Giovanni Angelini (1,588 m, approx. 6 hours), where the Mezzodì mountain group shows itself in all its Dolomite magnificence.
Variant from Barón
You can start the Zoldo circuit in the centre of Forno di Zoldo, crossing the Maè stream on the Rio Jordào bridge, and reach the hamlet of Barón (856 m). Take trail 531 between the houses; it slopes up eastwards in the woods for a long distance until it joins the path coming from Le Bócole.
